Our modern culture has lost much of the richness of ourselves that was once conveyed
in myth of the warrior. In fact, the word ‘myth’ is often used to denigrate and trivialize or belief, dismissing it as fiction, as a myth to be exploited, showing it to be unscientific, misleading force.
In dismissing the myth of the warrior many resign themselves to the ‘real’ world, a world lost of meaning and purpose. No wonder we think of ourselves as struggling in the rat race. We spend all our time, energy and ambition absorbed in the struggle for making more and more money.
Then, the parts of us not dedicated to earning money become focused on such issues as status, fashion, material acquisition, political or religious dominance, and the pursuit of meaningless leisure.
In the face of this massive effort in these pursuits, our senses have become so numb that finally we can only respond to exaggerations of stimulation. Obsession with drugs, alcohol, sex, movies, television and the massive amounts of negative events around us permeate our lives.
At last we become so numb that we begin to search for guidance and a code for living, but usually find more of the same. And the price we pay is boredom, depression, fear, and alienation.
The recent discontent for the few of us proves that there is longing within to live a rich and fulfilling life and a desire to be alive. Some of us have begun to see the rat race and enormous levels of stimulation, offered as entertainment, as only a way of trying to get beyond the confines and the prison of the material web that entangles us.
There is an assertion in our struggle that there must be something more to life. Our definition of the ‘real-world’ however inhibits many of us from embracing the archetype of the warrior.
This is not surprising, especially in a culture that has lost its ancient teaching and stories that have guided us and provided a base for right living and various levels of knowledge.
The separation and alienation we feel from the rest of the universe is the price we pay. The out of control materialism and disregard for others and for our environment, has replaced the feeling of being a part of the world and knowing our place in the scheme of things.
This loss is felt deeply by countless of individuals, many of whom cannot identify what it is they are missing and who are not quite sure from what it is they are alienated, they just know there must be more.
They are searching for the path of the warrior.
A warrior can be defined as a relentless hunter of personal power. The quest for personal power is a quest for evolution, not domination. It is a quest designed to bring you face to face with your magnificence.
